MN Recalls Food Shelf Venison Due to Lead Fragments

For those that missed it MN has "recalled" venison donated to food shelves. The state issued a recall after finding bullet fragments in some donated meat. People, bullet fragments can happen when you hunt. Spit them out if you happen to get one in your deer sausage.

What we have here is a failure in the Liberal mind that prevents the synapses from firing and actually creating a coherent intelligent thought.

As I read this article two things come to mind.

One is that someone is really trying hard to eliminate hunting and they know that banning hunting outright would never pass. So, they have to manufacture a health scare to create a crisis that leads to massive panic and frenzy and calls for the Government to fix the problem. (Like when has Government ever truly solved a problem?) Next thing you know they will ban all lead bullets in a "Health and Wellness" law and no one will be allowed to hunt (except with rubber bullets). They have already banned lead shotgun pellets for large amounts of hunting. The incrementalism of Liberal control will ensure that outcome.

The story says the highest sample had 46.3 milligrams of lead. As a hunter I know what they are saying here. The largest fragment found must have weighed in at 46.3 milligrams. That is a very tiny piece of lead. Another fact that is missed among non hunters is that the fragments are not small enough to be absorbed by the human body. Lead has to be absorbed to harm you. Lead chunks cannot be absorbed. Lead fumes (from smelting pots) or possible super fine lead power may be absorbable. But not lead chunks.

My second thought is there is a very easy and cheap solution. Again as a hunter I know what these Liberals do not know. Upon shooting a deer a bullet may or may not fragment. The amount of fragmentation depends on where the bullet hits the deer. The bullet NEVER EVER dissolves into the deer's meat, blood or other tissues. Sine I process my own venison I always cut the bullet wound area out of the deer and clean the surrounding area very well. Even then a small fragment can make into the meat where you did not expect. I once shot a deer square between the eyes from about 75 yards (yeah I'm bragging here, hunters do that). I found most of my 30-06 bullet in the neck of the deer.

How did that happen? Simple and any medical examiner would know the answer and having worked at HCMC in the past and listened to doctors in the ER and various ICU's tell the stories of what they had seen I learned a few things. Head shots can have strange results. Skulls are amazingly strong and their sole purpose is to protect the brain and they do it well. Many times when a person or animal is shot in the head the skull will deflect the bullet around itself but the bullet is still trapped under the skin and muscle tissue. This leads to the bullet ending up in places unexpected. Such as in the neck meat of the deer I shot.

As I was saying the solution is cheap and simple. All meat processors should and may be compelled (by market forces not law) to use metal detectors. They can check all meat shot by hunters for lead fragments and take the proper actions to remove the fragments. Even the inexpensive hand held metal detectors should be able to find bullet fragments.

What I see coming is a massive addition to some "Heath and Wellness" bill that outright bans all lead bullets, bans feeding the poor with venison that is not raised on an organic free-range deer farm owned by certified "Good Liberals" and paid for via a deer farm subsidy by my tax dollars to the tune a few hundred million a year. That is the Liberal solution.

The Conservative solution is for people that eat venison to simply only eat meat that has been tested with a metal detector. Meat processors will obey market pressures and start using metal detectors to test for bullet fragments. The cost of processing a deer goes up five dollars and venison eaters and hunters are happy. The best part is hunters can then still donate deer to food shelve to feed those that need feeding.
